Tower of Health
Can skyscrapers be good for you?

Twenty enthusiastic students drawn from a wide range of schools and practices worked in teams with passion and determination to make their proposals for towers on the Guy’s hospital site adjacent to The Shard.

The one week intensive design charette culminated in student presentations to a review panel including Paul Serkis form Brookfield Multiplex, Alastair Gorlay Programme Director at Guys and St Thomas’s NHS Foundation Trust, and Ivan Harbour from Rogers Stirk Harbour. A very close run competition resulted in 2 prizes: Highly commended for Paul Bailey, Elena Buffa, Camelia Ivan, Fraser Maitland and Andrew Rixson. The winning team consisting of Claire Burnham, Dominic Davis, Krissi Dullehan, Jiri Richter and Edward Tipaldo best caught the spirit of the competition and presented a clear and coherent proposal for a group of linked towers. The judging panel also featured Mary Jane Rooney of LSBU, Mike Nightingale of IBI Nightingale, Jamie Bishop of Fleet Architects and AfH and Susan Francis, Programme Director of AfH.

The students developed the brief to design a civic tower as a reposte the London skyline dominated by skyscrapers of City institutions. They were encouraged not only to think about the hospital activities but also amenity space such as swimming pools, restaurants, health spa and retail. They were urged to find ways to connect users with the neighbourhood and nature, consider light and views, as well as thinking about the structural and functional aspects of designing a tower.

‘It was wonderful to see the audacity and inventiveness of the designs- well done.’
Wendy de Silva, P+HS architects, Sponsor

The week began with an inspiring and challenging Expert Seminar on the 29th floor of Guy’s Hospital Tower: Tina Nolan from Healthcare Partnering presented the hospital vision and looked at how the site is likely to develop over the next 10-15 years; Paul Appleton from Allies and Morrison addressed the hospital in the city drawing lessons from other hospital sites about masterplanning; Ivan Harbour described the design principles for the new Cancer Centre currently under construction on an adjacent site showing how 14 floors of accommodation has been simplified into 4 vertical villages; David Leversha and Simon Bourke explained the mechanics and structural complications of designing towers; Andy Barnett from Hopkins illustrated how to achieve compassion in hospital design from their recent work at Evelina Children’s Hospital and the UCH Macmillan Cancer Centre. Finally Professor Bas Molenaar from the Netherlands summarised the key design issues inspiring students to imagine and dream.

The finale of the charette was a review in which the 4 teams of student presented their proposals to the judges, sponsors and AfH members. With an amazing view of the London skyline and overlooking the site from afar, the students presented their proposals to an enthusiastic crowd. The presentations were spirited and energetic with ideas represented by physical models, sketches and drawings and even an Ipod video. Each group explored the brief with integrity pushing the boundaries yet respecting the context and needs of the users. It was fantastic to see such different interpretations: the fantastical futuristic plug-in, the ‘tetra –tower’, the community of vertical streets, and the hospital for people who don’t like hospitals.

‘The event generated a brilliant dynamism, and the bringing together of the complex issue of creating a high rise hospital in a historic part of central London that did not alienate but embraced the local community and those that would use the building.
I really enjoyed the enthusiasm, endeavour and skill that the students brought to the event. Every one of them had great ideas, and it must have been a close call to select an eventual winner.’

From Simon Bourke Buro Happold Presenter

The charette was undoubtedly a success and students, tutors and presenters gave their all. It marks a great achievement for all involved.

‘I thought the Student design awards event this year was brilliant, showing a tangible progression from last year and the year before. Firstly, the very strong briefing line up raised the bar for the students. Secondly, the architectural school forum for the judging, hosting the participating students, a real client with a current interest in the chosen design challenge and excellent mix of commercial and architectural sponsors, all run very professionally was impressive and a very enjoyable experience.’
