AfH - SUSTAINABILITY – WORKSHOP AND PRESENTATIONS All architects are aware of the importance of the impact of sustainability on all buildings and have a reasonable grasp of the principals in theory. What is lacking for many architects is a sufficient understanding of means implementing the theories and generic requirements into practical design and specification for a project, particularly for health buildings. The draft programme is:
AfH - SECOND STUDENT HEALTH DESIGN AWARDS Following the success of last years awards, Architects for Health is pleased to announce its second Annual Student Health Design Awards which are to be held at the RIBA London in August 2008. The AfH Committee hopes that the annual student awards will build on the dialogue initiated between the academic community and practicing healthcare architects last year. By establishing a focus on what is an exciting and expanding industry, AfH believes the quality of design within the healthcare sector will improve and progress as more graduate architects choose to work within it, and this in turn will encourage and motivate existing architects within the industry. As with last year, entries will be taken of all student healthcare related designs. This year we will also be offering the option of using a brief as provided by AfH. Additionally we are able to offer advice and input to universities wishing to use a healthcare building type on their curriculum. Interested Tutors and students should contact AfH. For a comprehensive review of the first awards in 2007 please visit the First Student Health Design Awards Section The Architects for Health - Second Student Health Design Awards 2008 are sponsored by Brookfield Europe AfH - DESIGNING FOR HOSPITAL AT HOME The purpose of the presentation/debate is to look at design issues raised by the expectation that increasingly, healthcare should be delivered where practicable within the home environment. Four speakers/presentations will discuss the promotion/integration of, policies for and design requirements associated with the integration of hospital/care functions within home environments. “Although the acute hospital is the standard venue for treatment of acute illness, it is not always an ideal care environment, especially for older persons. "The acute hospital can be a hazardous place for... persons to receive care. Latrogenic illness, delirium, functional decline, and other adverse events occur frequently and can precipitate a 'cascade to dependency.' Also, there is increasing evidence that the culture of care in the acute hospital is often at odds with the wishes of patients. "Hospital At Home care can substitute for an acute hospital stay and a patient may avoid these problems while receiving high quality hospital-level care in their home." AfH at Harrogate Exhibition More details to be announced AfH - CHILDRENS HOSPITALS AND RECENT RESEARCH + AGM Organiser – Paul Mercer A relatively large number of children's hospitals have been completed within the last few year and the event will seek to discover how the contemporary children's hospital is approached, what constitutes latest thinking and whether there are robust research principles being applied to new children's acute care. There will be a range of presentations on current design thinking including a new children's hospital near Kiev, designed by BDP and the new Alder Hay Children's Hospital by Avanti. Examples from overseas will also be showcased.
