In-patient accommodation options for choice: European case studies - HBN 4, Volume 2

Health Building Note 4: Volume 2 (1998), In-patient accommodation options for choice: European case studies, examines recent thinking on ward design in selected countries in Europe and through illustrations of good practice, is a useful addition to the analysis of UK ward design in volume 1 (published in 1997). These European case studies compare and contrast 16 hospitals in eight countries, considering the issues of physical organisation and planning; space requirements and dimensions; environmental quality issues; and alternative spatial arrangements. Each of the eight countries is profiled in-depth. The Note gives background information on the organisation of the different healthcare systems, funding, service trends, procurement processes, and where applicable, design guidance. Commentary on the 16 hospitals featured includes site and location; the planning programme; the brief; building organisation; and details of the in-patient accommodation. It is summarised in six key study areas and richly supported with plans, photographs and schedules of accommodation.
