Architects for Health Student Design Awards 2016
The AfH Student Design Awards challenge students of architecture and design to explore innovative and compassionate design for health and social care settings.
The Architects for Health (AfH) Student Design Awards is an annual design competition for students and challenges students of architecture and design to explore innovative and compassionate design for health and social care settings. This programme forms a key constituent within the AfH calendar of events and coincides with our European Healthcare Design Congress, organised in conjunction with Salus, and held at the Royal College of Physicians in Regents Park.
As well as promoting good design, AfH is also deeply committed to encouraging the next generation of architects to think, engage and develop a passion about the quality of design for health and social care settings.
Our goal is to celebrate the opportunities in health and social care for innovation and experimentation and to bring together students from different disciplines to share fresh thinking. This year was the most ambitious yet with AfH collaborating with 7 schools of architecture and design including courses in public art, interior architecture and architecture from across the UK.
This year we ran two Award programmes
- Firstly, we engaged with students through both a London based project and worked closely with Guys and St Thomas’s Hospitals NHS Trust, who acted as a proxy client to support the London project and GSTT Award.
- The second award was the Open Award, where we encouraged colleges and universities to embed the health programme into their curricula and give exposure to those already engaging in healthcare projects. AfH supported participants through reviews and seminars.
- We also awarded prizes for the Best Drawing, Best Concept and a special prize from the judges.
Winners were rewarded with cash prizes, complementary AfH membership and an opportunity to discuss their work with others including architectural and design leaders in healthcare. Students’ work was exhibited at the European Healthcare Congress and we organised a separate event at the Chelsea College of Art where participating students, tutors and professionals met to discuss their work followed by the Awards ceremony, with the RIBA President Jane Duncan invited to present the Awards.
Architects for Health are indebted to Wienerberger for their continuing support of this programme and we are delighted that the company share our desire to encourage and support students in developing their interest in healthcare design, whilst giving Wienerberger exposure to the next generation of designers and specifiers. We acknowledge and embrace a close working relationship between the design professions, universities and industry in working collaboratively to achieve this aspiration.
