EXECUTIVE COMMITTEE ORDINARY MEMBER - 5 CANDIDATES

Name of candidate: Dr Evangelia Chrysikou
Nominator: Paul Mercer
Seconder: Vissi Plati

I am writing to express my interest in contributing to the AfH executive committee. As an Associate Professor in Healthcare Architecture and Planning at the Bartlett, I would be honoured to connect academic colleagues in the built environment and health with AfH, facilitating collaborations between cutting-edge research, industry stakeholders, the NHS and international healthcare providers.

I am eager to help A4H play an active role in research dissemination, ensuring it remains at the forefront of shaping future developments in healthcare architecture. By leveraging A4H’s collective thought leadership, the organization can continue to lead in shaping policy and practice in the healthcare sector.

Additionally, I bring experience connecting A4H with international organizations, including the European Public Health Association, the Urban Land Institute, and UN-affiliated groups. These networks can elevate A4H’s global visibility and influence.

As Programme Lead of the MSc Healthcare Facilities, I have been shaping the next generation of future leaders in healthcare architecture and planning, preparing them to be engaged and active members of AfH both in the UK and internationally.

I look forward to the opportunity to work with the AfH to advance these initiatives and shape the future of healthcare design.

Name of candidate: Ruairi Reeves
Nominator: Bob Wills
Seconder: Jaime Bishop

I am an architect and director of Medical Architecture. I’ve worked in healthcare design for over twenty years and developed a passion for creating effective, therapeutic environments.

When I joined the Committee 3 years ago, I wanted to help continue AfH’s programme of high-quality talks and visits, to help AfH reach all regions, and to promote healthcare design in education.

Over the last three years, I have helped to organise AfH’s “Heal” stream, including: building visits to BDP’s Royal Marsden Oak Cancer Centre, Abe Roger’s Royal Marsden Maggie’s Centre, CF Moller’s Springfield Hospital and Ryder’s Highgate East Mental Health, and organised and co-chaired the Living Well in Later Life webinar, Healing City webinar, and AfH talks at Healthcare Estates. I have also judged the Student Awards, presented at 20×2 and Design Matters, become co-organiser of the Ann Noble Research Award, and recently became responsible for organising building visits.

Over the next 3 years, I intend to focus on a high quality programme of building visits, with a pipeline already planned in early 2025, help organise talks, manage the Ann Noble Research Award, help broaden events outside London, and continue being a proactive member of the Committee

Name of candidate: Caroline Mulholland
Nominator: Alice Green
Seconder: Stuart MacArthur

The five years to date that I have spent on the AfH Executive Committee continue to reinforce my belief that AfH has the breadth of experience and expertise to take a leadership role in driving design excellence in the widest healthcare environments.

As membership secretary I am proud to have brought in free membership for NHS organisations. I have been fortunate to host the Future Leaders event in Newcastle and to facilitate presentations both online and in person for AfH. I bring the perspective of both end user/client and contractor/supplier to the debate with colleagues from architect practices, and I am excited to continue to contribute to the knowledge sharing events.

The New Hospital Programme and wider capital investment in the NHS provides real opportunities to think more holistically about design and the benefits that it can bring to people and an organisation. As a qualified business case practitioner, I understand the criteria that NHS organisations need to fulfil, particularly Modern Methods of Construction, Net Zero Carbon and Digital. Healthcare design can influence, and be influenced, by these – with AfH at the forefront of sharing best practice and innovation.

Name of candidate: Iona McAllister
Nominator: Danny Gibson, Director, MJ Medical
Seconder: Kate Bradley, Associate Director, MJ Medical

I am excited to put myself forward as a candidate for the position of Executive Committee Member. With 16 years of hands-on experience in healthcare, including my pivotal role in NHS England’s New Hospital Programme (NHP), Operational Management and Registered Clinical Exercise Physiologist, I am ready to bring a wealth of knowledge and fresh ideas to the table.

One of my key priorities is to cultivate conversation around ward rehabilitation spaces, such as gyms and activities of daily living areas, to boost patient recovery and operational efficiency—critical areas that align with your Mend and Heal streams of work.

I am also passionate about engaging with Generation Z to understand their expectations for the future of healthcare. By doing so, I hope to champion initiatives like your Student Design Awards, ensuring we create a healthcare environment that resonates with the needs of the next generation.

With my ongoing involvement in NHP and a range of healthcare schemes, I bring valuable insights into both the NHS and international healthcare landscapes. I am confident that my unique perspectives and strategic input will help propel Architects for Health’s mission forward.

Encourage Collaboration, Enable Creativity, Enhance Healing!

Name of candidate: Benjamin Wall
Nominator: Alex Solk
Seconder: James Gordon

As a practicing architect and Health + Care associate at Sheppard Robson I will bring over 15 years’ experience in NHS and private healthcare design. I have a record of working with live hospital environments to create people-centred spaces that place the patient first and ensure complex clinical requirements are achieved. I am a proponent of designing with empathy and have authored a research paper on design and early pregnancy miscarriage and have spoken at IHEEM and Design in Mental Health on dementia design and acute environments. I also hold an MRes in Healthcare Design from The Royal College of Art.

I will bring an open and curious mindset to AfH, with a specific focus on supporting more formalised research on how architecture impacts health outcomes, and how we involve the professions and wider public in the making of the healthcare space through participation, publication, and policy. I will contribute to the development of the next generation of healthcare designers and support AfH to offer a platform for new voices to be heard and celebrated, building on the existing links AfH has with industry and academia, reaching out to new talent through mentorship and knowledge exchange.
