We are pleased to announce this year’s winners:
The GSTT Award
We worked closely with Guy’s and St Thomas’ NHS Foundation Trust who acted as a proxy client providing information, drawings and guided tours of Guy’s and St Thomas’ Hospitals.
Criteria
- An innovative approach to therapeutic design
- A sensitivity to the needs of staff and patients/design users
- Clarity of presentation
- Considered design response to its physical, social and operational context
There were 6 Nominations from UAL Chelsea and University of Westminster and the Judges were:

WINNER
UAL Chelsea College of Art, MA Interior Design and Spatial for DIRT. A series of glass art installations using abstracted images of accumulated weathering, hinting at layers of architectural history and traces of human intervention.
HIGHLY COMMENDED
University of Westminster, Interior Architecture for The sound of silence, the sound of music. An intriguing idea that introduces music to hospital waiting areas in a way that interacts with patients and visitors: taking them on a musical journey.
The Open Award
We encouraged colleges and universities to embed health care into their curriculum; to give exposure to those already engaging in healthcare projects.

- Considered design response to its physical, social and operational context
There were 11 nominations from 4 schools of Architecture and Interior Architecture, including the AA, The Bartlett, University of Brighton and London South Bank University; and 3 written projects from Liverpool John Moores University. The Judges were:

WINNER
The Bartlett Unit 6 for Peckham Hospice Care Home. A future with tech savvy pensioners …A hospice as a theatre set, inspired by technology to support life affirming aspirations…with overtones of Terry Gilliam’s Brazil!
HIGHLY COMMENDED
Architectural Association Diploma Unit 13 for The Third Age Farm. Dairy Farming into the Third Age in this integrated care home, complete with Tempietto!
Best Drawing – WINNER
The Bartlett Unit 6 for Dementia Village: Peckham Horizon. Graphically assured scheme which aims to delight and stir the senses of patients with dementia, with a series of pavilions embedded in the landscape.
Best Concept – WINNER
The AA Diploma Unit 13 for Health Highway. A radical intervention to realign emergency services and create a new health pathway – a Healthy Highway – in a tower as a riposte to the ”Paddington Pole”.
Judges Special Prize for Architecture – WINNER
The Bartlett for Peckham Health Common. An ambitious programme, superbly illustrated, which mediates the patient journey between community and landscape.
Judges Special Prize for Interiors – WINNER
UAL Chelsea College of Art, MA Interior Design and Spatial for Priming Room. An air lock which seeks to decompress stressed clinical staff infers the power of design to positively influence mood through the use of space, light and materials. It uses technologies are very current now in people’s approach to relaxation. Practical. Poss
ible.
Prizes
Winners were rewarded with cash prizes, a chance to exhibit project work at national conferences, complementary AfH membership and an opportunity to discuss their work with others including architectural and design leaders in healthcare.
